Let’s get to my early NBA DFS picks for DraftKings and FanDuel. As always this is a quick peek at the upcoming slate. Things are subject to change so check Team Rise or Fall throughout the day for the latest news and notes.
Start your research with this spot every day for our first look at standout Vegas totals, pace up picks, and notable injury news. At the end I’ll address how I would handle this slate with the info we have available. This is a preview and plenty of decisions are subject to change depending on how the day’s news plays out.
We’re currently looking at an 11-game slate so even if there are postponed games we should still have a good pool of games. I would say worst case scenario three games get pulled today.
Let’s get to the picks!
Chicago Bulls @ Charlotte Hornets O/U 228.5
The Bulls take on the Hornets in the game with the highest implied total on the slate. The highest profile player in the game is Zach Lavine (9.5k DK and 9.3k FD). He’s been on fire with an average of 50 fantasy points per game over his last five games.
Other players I like in this game include Gordon Hayward (7.7k/7.8k), Terry Rozier (6.7k/7k), and Lauri Markkanen (6.6k/6.7k). This is expected to be an up and down the court type of game so Lamelo Ball (7.8k/7.2k) is in consideration even with a couple of low output games in his recent history.
Atlanta Hawks @ Minnesota Timberwolves O/U 225
In NBA DFS I’m usually looking for minutes and high point totals/pace. This is the second highest implied game total on the slate so I definitely want to roster a player or two from this game. Trae Young (9.6k DK/9.9k FD), Clint Capela (8.3k/9.2k), and John Collins (7.4k/6.8k) lead the picks on the Atlanta side.
On the Minnesota side of the court I’m looking at D’Angelo Russell (8.7k/8.4k) and Naz Reid (5.2k/4.7k). The Timberwolves have a weird mix of players and trying to figure out who will perform well for them is tough night after night.
Brooklyn Nets @ Cleveland Cavaliers
Brooklyn Pace Rating: 102.5
Cleveland Pace Rating: 96.8
Game Total: 224
We just saw these two teams matchup on Wednesday when Collin Sexton (7.3k DK/7.5k FD) lit up the Nets for 59 DraftKings points in a double OT shootout. Kevin Durant has been ruled out for this contest so James Harden (10.8k/10.7k) and Kyrie Irving (9k/9.2k) will look to do the majority of the scoring for BK.
There’s no guarantee in NBA DFS that the guys that played well on Wednesday will play well today. And it was a double overtime game so the scores are inflated. With that said Larry Nance Jr. (6.7k/7.1k), Cedi Osman (6.5k/5.9k), and Jarrett Allen (6.6k/7k) all played well in the last game.
Probable: Tomas Satoransky, Patrick Williams, Otto Porter, Chandler Hutchinson, Cody Zeller, Frank Jackson, Josh Jackson, Seth Curry, Gabe Vincent, Goran Dragic, Josh Okogie, and Marvin Bagley III.
Questionable: Michael Carter-Williams, Myles Turner, Tyler Herro, Pascal Siakam, Darius Garland, Cam Reddish, De’Andre Hunter, Frank Ntilikina, Austin Rivers, Hassan Whiteside, and Michael Porter Jr.
Doubtful: Wendell Carter Jr. and Danilo Gallinari.
Out: Danuel House, John Wall, Christian Wood, Mo Bamba, Kevin Durant, Jayson Tatum, Mike Scott, Jimmy Butler, Avery Bradley, Myers Leonard, Kevin Love, Juan Hernangomez, Karl-Anthony Towns, Ricky Rubio, Dorian Finney-Smith, Josh Richardson, Dwight Powell, Maxi Kleber, Al Horford, and Dario Saric.
James Harden (10.8k DK/10.7k FD) – As I mentioned above Kevin Durant is out for tonight’s game against Cleveland. This is going to give Harden the bulk of the offensive work. He’s averaging 50 fantasy points per game over his last five games and I don’t see him scoring anything less than that tonight.
Jamal Murray (7k DK/6.8k FD) – Murray and the Denver Nuggets travel to Phoenix to take on the Suns in a game with an implied total of 220. Murray had a major dud with less than 20 fantasy points in his last game. I’m looking for him to bounce back tonight in the desert. Murray is averaging 34 points per game over his last three games, even with the bad outing dragging the average down.
Luguentz Dort (5.2k DK/5.5k FD) – Dort is averaging 32 fantasy points per game over his last three games including a 46.5 DK points outing two games ago. The Oklahoma City Thunder are in Los Angeles to take on the Clippers in a game with a 219.5 implied total. If he gets 25 minutes (or maybe a few more in a losing blowout) he should have no problem hitting value tonight.
