Bottom of the Barrel Week 16
Chris Robin https://twitter.com/DetroitBeastie
We must respect all the time and dedication of what other people are doing. We have all run into other people, friends, and family who think we are weird. Whether it’s what we are eating, studying or hobbies. What some folks consider weird might be normal for you. What we make fun of might be someone trying their hardest.
If you are reading this, I assume you’re handy on social media. Over the years I think it is safe to say you can lump certain folks into certain categories. The page that is always bucking the system. The page that checks in occasionally just drops in and out. Or the motivational page posting uplifting and powerful messages.
My favorite is this, “Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about.” It is cheesy yes, something you would find at Target to hang on your wall, but it carries some weight. Especially in today’s day and age. The last few months, over a year now, have been tough sledding on everyone. Look, I am aware being kind and showing empathy isn’t for everyone but do me a favor, please, try it out. We are less than a week away from Christmas. Give those around you a break. Heck, give yourself a break. If it’s not for you then come back after the holiday, I will refund your misery!
Week 16, per usual, kicks off with Thursday Night Football followed by two games on Christmas! We are in for a real treat this week!
Patrick Mahomes KC v PIT(10th)(FD-$8,700)(DK-$7,700)(Y!-$37)
Do you remember a few weeks ago when folks were considering starting Carson Wentz of Mahomes? I do, and it got grim for a few days! Now, fresh off a 410 passing yard game with three touchdown passes they host the Steelers. On paper, this one looks close. In real life, the Chiefs should annihilate Pittsburgh in Arrowhead.
As we look ahead to the quarterback position you will notice a few more QB’s than normal in Bottom of the Barrel. Well, I never really count the exact number of players per position. We just follow the value and matchups here at B&B!
Russell Wilson SEA v CHI(29th)(FD-$7,500)(DK-$6,100)(Y!-$31)
When is the last time Russ was so up and down? Or not a must-start? In all honesty, this might be the first time. To be fair my Bottom of the Barrel Week 16 notes were done on Monday. So, I went by the honor system that Wilson would have a respectable stat line on Tuesday. I was wrong.
Jared Goff DET @ ATL(31st)(FD-$7,100)(DK-$5,400)(Y!-$25)
In all my years playing DFS, I have learned to recognize AND ride hot streaks! Dare I say the Detroit Lions and Jared Goff are running hot right now after smashing the Cardinals? The Falcons are 31st against opposing QB’s! Lock and load on Lions in Week 16? I will repeat, LOCK and LOAD Lions in Week 16!
Joe Burrow CIN v BAL(24th)(FD-$7,100)(DK-$5,900)(Y!-$30)
Joe has been an enigma wrapped inside of riddle these last few games. Quote taken from Busta Rhymes in Halloween Resurrection. With the trio of Chase, Higgins, and Boyd we have been expecting a little more for Joe as of late. This match-up with Baltimore should be fireworks. In a weird way I am hoping Tyler Huntley starts, don’t you?
Justin Fields CHI @ SEA(9th)(FD-$7,000)(DK-$5,200)(Y!-$23)
Kid, just hang onto the football in Seattle and you will be okay!
Matt Ryan ATL v DET(13th)(FD-$6,800)(DK-$5,400)(Y!-$25)
My oh my have the tables turned! The Lions, as of late, haven’t been the team to pick on. However, they are still the Lions. That alone has my attention. Not looking for anything crazy out of Ryan here but 250 yards and a few touchdown passes are reasonable.
Ben Roethlisberger PIT @ KC(30th)(FD-$6,800)(DK-$5,500)(Y!-$26)
Big Ben! He’s back! Obviously, I am fooling around but hey the last few weeks he has protected the football and gotten a little out of his comfort zone. Meaning, Ben rushed for a touchdown last week and has Pittsburgh in the hunt for a Wild Card spot.
Davis Mills HOU v LAC(11th)(FD-$6,600)(DK-$5,500)(Y!-$20)
Now we are talking! Mills was mentioned in B&B the last two weeks and has proceeded to toss five total touchdowns. Is this kid the long-term answer in Houston? Absolutely not but makes for a perfect option in DFS formats this week!
Zach Wilson NYJ v JAX(15th)(FD-$6,600)(DK-$5,300)(Y!-$20)
This article, some weeks, is a battle. A battle in my head between giving short-term seasonal fantasy advice and keeping it just to DFS content. Most times what I have to say goes on to show a larger view while reeling it back in. With Zach Wilson though, it’s an odd occurrence. I cannot get a handle on the kid. In Week 15 he attempted 23 passes and was only able to complete just 13 of them for 170 yards. The only reason he is on the Week 16 DFS map is the match-up against the Jaguars.
Drew Lock DEN @ LV(20th)(FD-$6,600)(DK-$5,100)(Y!-$20)
Aye! Here we go! Can the Broncos get another boost of late-season magic out of Drew Lock? If I am not mistaken last time this happened, we got a killer Lock rapping along to Young Jeezy GIF!
Jake Fromm NYG @ PHI(22nd)(FD-$6,400)(DK-$5,000)(Y!-$20)
Completely speculative here but if Fromm gets the start in Philadelphia, I think he should be on our DFS radar! Granted, on Tuesday the Football Team was able to hang 17 points while eating up some yardage against the Eagles. Realistically, at cost, 200 passing yards and a one touchdown pass would be outstanding!
Austin Ekeler LAC @ HOU(28th)(FD-$9,400)(DK-$8,100)(Y!-$33)
Austin was placed on the COVID-IR Monday, December 20th which may scare off some folks here in Week 16. This Chargers team has started to gel. Yes, they lost to Kansas City in OT last Thursday but what a game! Austin continues to be a massive part of this offense and given the match-up its wheels up!
Bottom of the Barrel has always been about those low-cost and low-owned players. As you scroll through the top end of these running backs you will notice several are more expensive than normal. Just speaks volumes about the state of the position.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire KC v PIT(26th)(FD-$6,500)(DK-$5,800)(Y!-$17)
The Chargers defended CEH very well last week. Kansas City has perked up and Mahomes has come alive. Patrick is the straw that stirs the KC drink! Given the very favorable match-up, at home, give Clyde a look here in Week 16!
Miles Sanders PHI v NYG(25th)(FD-$6,500)(DK-$5,600)(Y!-$20)
As I plan and prepare each week for Bottom of the Barrel, I use a bunch of tools. To be honest, social media might be the best of it all. Just thumbing through it each day I see so many comments and awful takes. However, last night, one stuck with me. Paraphrasing here but it read like this, “Miles Sanders is a bum in the regular season but goes beast mode in the fantasy football playoffs!” Case in point, Tuesday night! 18 carries 131 yards along with two receptions for 15 yards. With Hurts back at the helm against, at home, the Eagles should pulverize the Giants in Week 16.
Melvin Gordon III DEN @ LV(29th)(FD-$6,300)(DK-$5,800)(Y!-$21)
See Javonte Williams, below!
Javonte Williams DEN @ LV(29th)(FD-$6,300)(DK-$6,100)(Y!-$23)
Glad you found it! I think it’s best to lump both backs together here. Both Melvin and Javonte carried the ball 15 times. As usual, Javonte was a bit more effective averaging 4.8 yards an attempt. For several weeks now, based on the matchup, both have been viable in the same lineup! I see no reason why we can’t use both in the same DFS lines this week.
Rashaad Penny SEA v CHI(20th)(FD-$6,100)(DK-$5,500)(Y!-$20)
Finally, we were given a Rashaad Penny game! Penny was the starting running back for the Seahawks on Tuesday. What did he then do? Carried the ball 11 times for only 39 yards. Also, left the game halfway through with a back issue allowing DeeJay Dallas to find the endzone. Not much surprises me anymore with fantasy football. However, I find it unbelievable after all the years not much has changed with Penny. Literally nothing.
Craig Reynold DET @ ATL(24th)(FD-$6,000)(DK-$4,500)(Y!-$17)
Craig has been an absolute joy the last few weeks in all formats. Accumulating 216 total yards, this kid has emerged as a viable option in DFS formats. Of course, once Swift or Jamaal Williams is back action that will push Craig down the depth chart but, for the time being, keep an eye on the Detroit backfield.9
Rhamondre Stevenson NE v BUF(13th)(FD-$5,900)(DK-$5,000)(Y!-$19)
I am starting to think Stevenson works best with Damien Harris active and in the lineup. However, last week the game script just sunk Rhamondre and his value. I believe the Patriots fell behind 20-0 and no one saw it coming. As we look ahead to Week 16 keep tabs on Harris and his hamstring. Not kidding when I say if Harris is active, I will be playing Stevenson.
Michael Carter NYJ v JAX(17th)(FD-$5,800)(DK-$5,200)(Y!-$22)
Just when we think we have it all figured out Tevin Coleman matches Michael Carter’s workload and makes us look silly. No worries, we survived and can try again this week! Who’s with me?!
Devin Singletary BUF @ NE(19th)(FD-$5,800)(DK-$5,100)(Y!-$16)
Buffalo running back Devin Singletary rushed 22 times for 86 yards and a touchdown in Week 15! Don’t look now but are the Bills going to ride Devin into the playoffs? The last few weeks have been a clown show for the Bills backfield, but it was nice to see this big-time workload for Singletary in Week 15. Given his price tag, I am willing to take the chance!
Devonta Freeman BAL @ CIN(18th)(FD-$5,600)(DK-$5,300)(Y!-$20)
Just when we think we have it all figured out, oh boy used that one already! Freeman was the preferred running back of choice for several weeks then out of nowhere Latavius Murray saw one more carry and put up 26 yards more yards. Look, at this point of the season any edge we can get we take. Meaning, I’d imagine last week may have freaked out some folks with Freeman. DFS is all about mitigating risk and I’m looking to the gamble with Freeman in Week 16!
Devontae Booker NYJ @ PHI(22nd)(FD-$5,600)(DK-$4,900)(Y!-$13)
At what point do the Giants shut down Saquon Barkley? An outlandish statement, right? I agree but if you’re a hard-core football fan, Giant’s fan, or a Barkley slappy then you’d notice Devontae has been more effective than Saquon as of late. Booker rushed eight times for 74 yards on 8 carries (9.3 avg) compared to Barkley’s 15 carries for only 50 yards (3.3 avg). Look, no ill will here but I’m making the switch rest of the season with Booker in my DFS lines.
Khalil Herbert CHI @ SEA(31st)(FD-$5,500)(DK-$4,300)(Y!-$14)
This is Bottom of the Barrel! What did you expect! Come to find out Herbert is slowly starting to morph into a nice pass-catching back for Chicago and rookie QB Justin Fields! If you look all the way back into Khalil’s draft profile you will see what a smart instinctive runner he is while being able to break tackles. Personally, it’s a perfect combo for middle-of-the-field reception work. This match-up is so sweet too.
Justin Jackson LAC @ HOU(28th)(FD-$5,400)(DK-$4,200)(Y!-$12)
A few times this NFL season I have found the same team double running back strategy to be useful. Obviously, team and match-up are dependent but it can absolutely work here with the Chargers. In advance of Week 15, we all knew LAC was going to scale back Austin’s snaps. Which they did and opened a window for Justin. Heading into Week 16 I’d imagine it’ll even out as we see Ekeler get a ton of work. However, looking at the ineptitude of the Texans defense it’s easy to bet on Jackson seeing his fair share of work too.
Rex Burkhead HOU v LAC(27th)(FD-$5,400)(DK-$4,500)(Y!-$13)
It’s phenomenal what you can find on the internet. All the memes, GIFs, and nicknames really are fantastic. Sexy Rexy rushed 16 times for 41 yards and caught 1-of-3 targets for six yards on Sunday. That is an extraordinary lack of success, 2.6 yards a carry to be clear. Last week the Chargers let CEH average 10.7 yards a pop. Can Rex duplicate the same success?
Ronald Jones II TB @ CAR(5th)(FD-$5,400)(DK-$5,100)(Y!-$18)
You had to of known this one was coming! With Leonard Fournette ‘likely’ landing on the IR and out for the remainder of the regular season a path has opened for Rojo. Let’s address the recent Le’Veon Bell signing. Normally I wouldn’t pay any mind to it, but the Bucs needed some depth at the RB spot bad as Gio Bernard is banged up too. Also, losing Godwin is a big blow. Now Mike Evans is week-to-week so who the hell knows how it shakes out.
Ke’Shawn Vaughn TB @ CAR(5th)(FD-$4,700)(DK-$4,400)(Y!-$10)
I jotted Ke’Shawn’s name down soon as the Fournette news broke and as the week has progressed it’s getting muddier in the Tampa Bay backfield. So, Vaughn being added here is kind of a wait-and-see mode. I will update as the week progresses.
Cooper Kupp LAR @ MIN(32nd)(FD-$9,800)(DK-$9,100)(Y!-$41)
Sent out a tweet earlier this week about how appetizing this match-up is, extremely juicy! In my videos, I harp on fading players with high salaries to grab leverage, but this is not one of those times. In Week 17 the Broncos come to town, and they are tough on opposing WR’s. Who cares though! This is Week 16! Take full advantage NOW. Big-time stat line incoming, just absolutely stuffed!
Much like the running backs mentioned here in Bottom of the Barrel Week 16, I would like to focus on the mid-tier wide-outs with a sprinkle of the cheapest plays. This late in the season there are absolutely some gems to be plucked! Lets’ dig in, shall we?
Tee Higgins CIN v BAL(20th)(FD-$6,500)(DK-$6,200)(Y!-$22)
After an outstanding stretch of games for Tee, he only caught two passes in Week 15. Like, what? Tee’s abysmal stat line in Week 15 snapped a streak of three straight games with at least 100 receiving yards. I believe it was a mix between a tough Denver secondary and an apprehensive Joe Burrow. Looking ahead to this AFC North tilt it really is one of, if not, the most important games the Bengals have played in years! Both teams are 8-6 and Cincinnati is currently in the first place. I fully expect the Bengals to come out swinging, big time.
Amon-Ra St. Brown DET @ ATL(29th)(FD-$6,500)(DK-$5,600)(Y!-$16)
Do we have a breakout on our hands? The storyline of football is different each season. The path of a DFS player is different every week. Who in their right mind would think that in Week 16 the Detroit Lions would be a terrific stack? Me, but to be fair I’m rarely in the right frame of mind.
DJ Moore CAR v TB(15th)(FD-$6,400)(DK-$5,700)(Y!-$17)
D.J. Moore caught 6-of-11 targets for 48 yards and a 2-point conversion. Also, this was his third straight game logging 10+ targets. Moore is locked for me in Week 16 when it comes to my DFS builds! I’m thinking 12 targets 7 or 8 receptions for 75+ yards and a touchdown!
Van Jefferson Jr. LAC @ MIN(32nd)(FD-$6,300)(DK-$5,500)(Y!-$21)
Van only caught two passes for 23 yards on Tuesday. Which now makes it two straight with only two receptions. Look, this one was once again completely dominated by Cooper Kupp which was to be expected. However, looking ahead to this one I have a feeling the entire Ram’s offense eats!
Tyler Boyd CIN v BAL(20th)(FD-$6,200)(DK-$5,100)(Y!-$15)
Tyler Boyd caught 5-of-6 targets for 96 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Broncos. I am always referencing the shell game in my content this season, but it makes sense! With Boyd, Chase, and Tee we are always left guessing and/or kept on our toes! Meanwhile, all three WR’s are absolutely in play here in Week 16!
Jamison Crowder NYJ v JAX(26th)(FD-$5,600)(DK-$5,000)(Y!-$15)
Given the limitations of rookie quarterback Zach Wilson as of late any of these New York Jets wide receivers catching a touchdown pass are low. Yet, as of last week, Crowder led the team in all the major receiving categories. Granted, only five receptions for 40 yards but with DFS if the volume is there then so will I!
Josh Reynolds DET @ ATL(29th)(FD-$5,400)(DK-$4,600)(Y!-$16)
Lions quarterback Jared Goff has been a different player since the addition of Josh Reynolds. Do you believe that statement? If you do, then give Josh an honest look in Week 16.
Braxton Berrios NYJ v JAX(26th)(FD-$5,300)(DK-$3,500)(Y!-$11)
Back-to-back weeks for Braxton in Bottom of the Barrel! In Week 15 Berrios was only targeted once which he spun into 26 yards. However, Berrios carried the ball twice for 10 yards and a touchdown. Mind you, Braxton is a wide receiver! I just love the idea that these Jets coaches are being creative and getting Braxton involved!
Tyler Johnson TB @ CAR(6th)(FD-$5,000)(DK-$3,900)(Y!-$14)
Pretty clear what’s happening here. With Godwin on the IR and out rest of the season, I’d imagine the Buccaneers and Tom Brady come up with a plan.
Scotty Miller TB @ CAR(6th)(FD-$4,900)(DK-$3,600)(Y!-$10)
Anytime Scotty has been talked about in DFS circles on a game-by-game basis he has done just enough to pay off his price tag. The Panthers defense is stout and should hang here but how many times have we seen Tom Brady make a superstar out of a no-name wide-out? Is Scotty next up to grab that Wes Welker, Danny Amendola, or Julian Edleman type moniker?
Mark Andrews BAL @ CIN(20th)(FD-$8,000)(DK-$7,000)(Y!-$26)
Mark had an outstanding Week 15. I believe 77 yards and a touchdown in the first quarter. The absolute true definition of MAN-drews! To be fair, as I mentioned earlier here, would you prefer Tyler Huntley this week over Lamar? At first glance, it’s a ridiculous notion but the more you dig in it’s not awful.
This season has been such a weird ebb and flow of tight ends. Looking at Kelce and Andrews dominate in back-to-back weeks it begs the question, is it still cool to punt the position?
Noah Fant DEN @ LV(30th)(FD-$5,600)(DK-$4,400)(Y!-$18)
Noah caught five passes for 57 yards on Sundays against the Bengals. I’m telling you now, get in on the late-season magic of Drew Lock!
James O’Shaughnessy JAX @ NYJ(24th)(FD-$5,300)(DK-$3,200)(Y!-$11)
O’Shaughnessy caught all 4 of his targets for 60 yards on Sunday against Houston. As silly as it sounds, at this point, doesn’t really matter who the Jaguars quarterback is. Just so happens it’ll remain Trevor Lawrence but I really feel as if there is a certain target share set in stone for James headed into Week 16.
Jared Cook LAC @ HOU(22nd)(FD-$5,100)(DK-$3,500)(Y!-$14)
First off, I wish Donald Parham Jr. the best. That was scary last Thursday but happy to have seen Don Jr. posted on his Twitter account with the thumbs up. In his absence, Jared Cook caught three of his seven targets for 32 yards. This LAC offense can be lethal when they get moving. Just based on the match-up Cook should be part of your player pool!
Evan Engram NYG @ PHI(32nd)(FD-$5,000)(DK-$3,400)(Y!-$15)
Jake Fromm and Evan Engram stack anybody? Who on earth is thinking that, aside from me?
CJ Uzomah CIN v BAL(27th)(FD-$5,000)(DK-$3,000)(Y!-$15)
Bengals tight end C.J. Uzomah caught 3-of-4 targets for 18 yards and to be fair Burrow only completed 15 passes. Classic case of not enough work to go around. I cannot shake this feeling of an absolute all-time classic between the Ravens and Bengals in Week 16. I want a piece of it!
Cole Kmet CHI @ SEA(28th)(FD-$5,000)(DK-$3,300)(Y!-$14)
Don’t know about you but the Kmet we saw on Monday Night was the Kmet we were all promised heading into the 2021 season, right? Cole caught six passes for 71 yards but has still not found the endzone this season! I do believe his luck changes in Seattle on Sunday! Will go as far as to say I think Cole catches TWO touchdown passes in Week 16!
Cameron Brate TB @ CAR(11th)(FD-$4,500)(DK-$2,500)(Y!-$10)
Nothing more than a trickle-down effect. Without Godwin, Mike Evans, and Leonard Fournette it’s only fair Brate may see an uptick in usage, right? Cam is already on the field a ton so why can’t we see a few extra bumps and releases?
Zach Gentry PIT @ KC(19th)(FD-$4,400)(DK-$2,800)(Y!-$10)
The rookie dynamo Pat Freiermuth suffered a concussion in Week 15. So now he must clear protocol to play in Week 16. Hopefully, he does. Hopefully, all is well with him. In the event he is unable to play Sunday in Kansas City Zach Gentry would be the next man up!
That it is! Bottom of the Barrel for Week 16 of the NFL season!
