Bottom of the Barrel Week 17 Wide Receivers NFL DFS Breakdown

December 30, 2022

As a kid Christmas felt like this month-long magical event. Multiple parties with friends and family with endless food and presents. As a boy I had to fight to stay awake. As an adult it comes and goes in the blink of an eye. As a man I willingly go to sleep early.

The week after Christmas leading up to the New Year has always been this weird nothing matters and nothing to do time. As a kid it was this endless time to hang out with your friends, play outside, or try out the newest video games! As an adult it’s about dodging calls, laying low, and being left alone.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Deep down we all know if put to the test we could stay up late and hang out with the best of them. That Christmas magic never really goes away, it just takes on a different meaning. Hopefully you had a peaceful and fulfilling holiday! One more to go, the New Year!

Let’s use some of the Christmas cash to boost our daily fantasy sports entries and winnings! All done responsibly, of course! Week 17 is upon us and here are some players and ideas I am rolling with.

I’ll get into all the details after a quick note about our new membership options! 😺

Wide Receivers

Justin Jefferson MIN @ GB(7th)(FD-$9,200)(DK-$9,500)(Y!-$36)

The Vikings are already in the Playoffs. The Packers need to win out and get some help. While Green Bay has a very fast and talented secondary no one on earth can keep pace with this kid. We are looking at his usual 11-12 targets, 8-9 receptions, 110+ yards, and a touchdown.

Allen Lazard GB vs. MIN(31st)(FD-$6,200)(DK-$5,400)(Y!-$15)

Like most of Aaron Rodgers 15+ year career this is what he does. Laying low for most of the season and turning it on at the last possible minute to get the Packers into the NFL Playoffs. When he flips the switch, he is like a surgeon with the football and all the offensive skill positional players benefit, a lot. Lazard has at least six targets and five receptions in three of his last five games for Green Bay. While catching 18 passes for 216 receiving yards. He hasn’t found the endzone during those last five games but that will all change on Sunday against a leaky Minnesota secondary. I’m expecting 6-7 targets, 4-5 receptions, 60 yards, and a touchdown.

George Pickens PIT @ BAL(22nd)(FD-$6,100)(DK-$5,100)(Y!-$16)

George handled all five of his targets last week for 57 yards. He also scored the Steelers only touchdown of Week 16. One thing I have noticed with a handful of these wide receivers in Week 17 have the term, “boom-or-bust” attached to them. That makes me warm and fuzzy inside! In daily fantasy sports circles, this late in the year, that should be music to your ears. When we look at Pickens this week against another AFC North foe in Baltimore, he has a chance to boom, big time. The Ravens should be headed to the postseason, but they aren’t exactly a steel trap in the secondary. They have given up the 5th most receiving yards to opposing pass catchers. I have George around 5-6 targets, 4-5 receptions, and 70-75 yards. He has averaged 14.9 yards a catch this year.

Jahan Dotson WSH vs. CLE(8th)(FD-$6,100)(DK-$4,600)(Y!-$17)

Rookie or not this kid has been outstanding. Even more impressive is that this is his first year in the NFL! The targets and workload that the Commanders have given him have been on par with his skill set. Make no mistake this is Terry McLaurin team, but Jahan has been a bright spot on a slumping Washington team. On paper the Browns are tough task, but they have given up 19 total TDs in their secondary. While Dotson has scored seven times. It is a sneaky match made in Week 17 heaven! I have Jahan at 5-6 targets, 4-5 receptions, 45-50 yards, and a touchdown!

DJ Chark Jr. DET vs. CHI(15th)(FD-$6,000)(DK-$4,300)(Y!-$17)

Here in Detroit, it’s a split crowd when it comes to this game. Half are pumped up and expecting a big-time blowout. While the other half are nervous and talking trap game. When we look at DJ this year, he has been the true definition of boom or bust. Last week he caught four passes for 108 yards! That a 21.6 yards per catch clip. Week 15 only one catch for 18 yards. Week 14 he caught six passes for 94 yards and in Week 13 he accumulated 98 yards on 5 receptions. Given the matchup, at home, I have DJ closer to a Week 13 or 14 type box score. Something like 5-6 targets, 4-5 catches, and if his averages hold true 80-85 yards.

Russell Gage TB vs. CAR(25th)(FD-$5,900)(DK-$3,800)(Y!-$14)

I do not know what is going on with Tom Brady. Could it be that father time is finally catching up with him? Regardless, Gage has been a part of the game plan after missing four weeks in the middle of the season. Russell saw twelve targets in Week 15 and six last week. Have these last few weeks of activity from Gage come at the expense of Mike Evans? Regardless, in DFS formats I would side with Gage based on the lower price tag and lowered expectations. I have Russ at 6-7 targets, 4-5 catches, and around 45-50 yards.

Romeo Doubs GB vs. MIN(31st)(FD-$5,900)(DK-$4,700)(Y!-$14)

Doubs and Randall Cobb were mixed in and out beautifully last week. Also, Romeo took over Christians Watson’s role after he left with an injury last week. For what it’s worth Watson was scheduled to practice in a limited capacity on Thursday but ended up going down as a DNP for a second straight day. Realistically, if Christian is unable to play on Sunday, then the trio of Romeo, Cobb, and Lazard should be in line for a ton of work. When we look at Romeo, he has now seen at least four targets in four of his last five games. It is also worth mentioning that he and Aaron Rodgers have started to gel and build chemistry. Not to get too excited but we could be in for a show with Rodgers and Romeo on Sunday against the Vikings. In the case that Christian Watson is out I have Doubs around 6-7 targets, 5-6 receptions, and 60-65 yards. A touchdown is also not out of the question.

Richie James Jr. NYG vs. IND(6th)(FD-$5,700)(DK-$4,300)(Y!-$13)

Richie Jr. led all the New York Giants receivers in Week 16 with eight catches for 90 yards! It’s been great to see James more active as of late. In the last three weeks James has seen 25 total targets! As it stands now the Colts are awful looking. Last week with Nick Foles at quarterback they only got to 3 total points. Foles was sacked 7 times and he threw 3 interceptions. If that’s the Colts team shows up Sunday in New York I like the entire Giants offense to run rough shot, at home, including Richie James! I am counting on 6-7 targets, 4-5 receptions, at least 50 yards, and a touchdown. I am all in on James Jr. this week!

Randall Cobb GB vs. MIN(31st)(FD-$5,400)(DK-$3,800)(Y!-$12)

The Vikings are a nice matchup and if fellow wideout Christian Watson is not playing then let’s plug-and-play Cobb. If you made it this far into the article, then you are aware of my love for the Packers receivers on Sunday. Personally, I have a few lines, already locked in, with all three Green Bay wideouts in them. I also have Cobb, Romeo, and Lazard mixed around all my entries. The process is sound! The match-up is juicy and the player prices are beautiful! I am expecting 4-5 targets, 3-4 receptions, and about 50 yards.

Greg Dortch ARZ @ ATL(24th)(FD-$5,300)(DK-$3,000)(Y!-$10)

Holy smokes what a Week 16 for Greg! Dortch caught ten of his eleven targets for 98 yards and carried the ball three times for 25 yards! No Colt McCoy at QB. The Cardinals don’t want Trace McSorley to start again. So, Arizona will be starting David Blough! Of the QB’s on the roster not named Kyler Murray Dave Blough is the most accurate. Hate it or love it I think Blough will work well with these Cardinal WRs especially Greg Dortch! Will he see 11 targets again this week? Highly unlikely but I do have him around 4-5 targets, 4-5 catches, and 50 yards. On top of another carry or two for an additional 10 yards. Beautiful lineup filler or salary relief guy!
