Gamble Play: Minnesota Vikings vs. Carolina Panthers
You’ve heard the saying, “Scared money don’t make money,” and this week, we’ve got a gamble play that might just pay off. The Minnesota Vikings are facing the Carolina Panthers. Now, before you brush this off, hear me out.
The Vikings’ defense may not have the best reputation, but we’re rolling the dice this week against the Panthers. Recent matchups against the Panthers have seen opposing defenses perform well. Take the Falcons from last week, for example. They managed to rack up 14 fantasy points with two interceptions and two sacks.
Why the optimism? The Panthers’ offensive line is struggling, having allowed the most QB pressures and hurry-ups in the NFL. If Bryce Young returns, he’s known to struggle under pressure. Even if it’s Andy Dolan behind center, the Vikings can capitalize on this weakness. They boast a whopping 64% blitz rate, the highest in the NFL. So, expect turnovers, pressure, and possibly defensive touchdowns. It’s a gamble worth taking.
Safe Play: Atlanta Falcons vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
For a safer option this week, consider the Atlanta Falcons going up against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Falcons’ defense has been surprisingly solid, allowing the seventh fewest points per game in the NFL, just 18 points on average.
This Falcons defense is creating turnovers, making pressures, and getting sacks. Last week, they put up 14 fantasy points on defense. Quite the turnaround for a defense that struggled with pressure and sacks last season. Against the Jaguars, who have had their struggles, especially Trevor Lawrence, who is still finding his footing, the Falcons’ defense looks like a safe bet.
Lock of the Week: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New Orleans Saints
Now, for my lock of the week, it’s the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the New Orleans Saints. With Derek Carr’s injury, Jameis Winston might step into the starting role for the Saints. However, he’s up against a formidable Buccaneers’ defense.
The Buccaneers held Jalen Hurts and the Eagles to just 23 points last week, which is no small feat given the Eagles’ offensive firepower. Plus, in a previous meeting with Winston, the Bucs came away with five takeaways and one defensive touchdown. Expect them to harass Winston and potentially grab interceptions and fumble recoveries. The Buccaneers’ defense is hitting its stride and could easily finish as a top-five defense this week.
Fade: New England Patriots vs. Dallas Cowboys
Finally, a word of caution for Week 4: Consider fading the New England Patriots’ defense when they face the Dallas Cowboys. While the Patriots’ defense looked impressive against the Jets, it’s a different story against the high-scoring Cowboys.
The Cowboys rank fifth in points per game, and the Patriots’ defense has been slow to start, with only one interception and seven sacks. In comparison, last year, they were tied for fifth in sacks through the first three weeks. So, it’s not the ideal matchup. If you have other options, it might be wise to look elsewhere this week.
