MLB DFS Top Plays for Wednesday 4/19/23

Top Tier

Let’s start with Andrew McCutchen. The Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder is slugging .643 in his last 31 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers with a similar repertoire to Colorado Rockies’ starter Austin Gomber. McCutchen is projected to bat third, so expect him to have plenty of opportunities to do some damage at the plate.

Speaking of the Pirates, Ke’Bryan Hayes is another player to keep an eye on. Gomber has allowed a slugging percentage of .921 against right-handed batters who hit the ball on the ground often like Hayes over the last two years. With his affordable $4,200 DK salary, Hayes makes for a great value play.

Moving on to the St. Louis Cardinals, Tommy Edman and Tyler O’Neill are two hitters who are in prime position to produce against Arizona Diamondbacks’ starter Madison Bumgarner. Edman is slugging .580 in his last 89 plate appearances against left-handers with low strikeout rates like Bumgarner over the last two seasons, while O’Neill is slugging .554 in his last 64 plate appearances against left-handers with similar profiles. Keep in mind that current Cardinals hitters are batting .296 against bottom-tier left-handed pitchers like Bumgarner over the last two years.

Mid Range

The Pirates’ Rodolfo Castro and Connor Joe are two more value plays worth considering against Gomber. Castro is slugging .492 in his last 66 plate appearances against soft-throwing left-handers like Gomber, while Joe is batting .333 (4-for-12) against left-handed pitchers with a similar repertoire to Gomber over the last two seasons.

Carlos Santana and Willson Contreras are two more intriguing options for the Pirates and Cardinals, respectively. Santana is slugging .594 in his last 36 plate appearances against left-handed pitchers with a similar profile to Gomber, while Contreras is slugging .650 in his last 87 plate appearances against left-handers with low strikeout rates like Bumgarner.

Moving on to the Diamondbacks, Corbin Carroll is coming off a hot streak with an OPS of 1.042 in his last 15 at-bats. He’s projected to bat fifth against the Cardinals’ Jake Woodford, who is a soft-throwing right-hander. Keep in mind that current Diamondbacks hitters have struck out just 17.2% of the time against soft-throwing right-handed pitchers like Woodford over the last two years.

Value

Andrew Benintendi of the Chicago White Sox is another hitter to consider against Philadelphia Phillies’ starter Taijuan Walker. Benintendi has an OPS of 1.045 in his last 12 at-bats over the last five days, and White Sox hitters have a 3.5-star average matchup against Walker.

Keep in mind that Mark Mathias of the Pirates and Jake Burger of the White Sox are also intriguing options to consider. Mathias is slugging .947 in his last 22 plate appearances against bottom-tier left-handers like Gomber, while Burger is projected to bat fifth against Walker, who has allowed a slugging percentage of .566 against right-handed batters who hit for power like Burger over the last two years.

Last but not least, Jurickson Profar of the Rockies is projected to bat first against Pirates’ starter Johan Oviedo, who has a similar repertoire to pitchers who have allowed an ERA of 4.53 against the Rockies over the last year. While matchup data is limited, it favors Profar.

These are just a few of the top MLB DFS plays for Wednesday, April 19th. As always, make sure to do your own research and consider other factors such as weather conditions and lineup changes before making your final picks. Good luck and happy gaming!
