MLB Top Stacks Early (Quick Overview)

The Red Sox and Orioles are ranked #1 and #3 on this initial run of the MLB Study Hub for today’s Early slate. Yesterday they put up 25 runs, and today both lineups have good matchups against Kyle Bradish and Michael Wacha. This will most likely be the chalkiest game of this 6 game early slate.

Interestingly, the Blue Jays are ranked #2 on the early run of the hub, vs Gerrit Cole. This likely has to do with the strength of the Blue Jays lineup overall and not really a knock against Cole. On a small slate, against a chalky Cole, they could give us a little leverage even if we chose not to full stack them.

Angels vs LHP Tyler Alexander

The Angels get a nice matchup this afternoon vs soft tossing left hander Tyler Alexander. Dating back to the 2021 season Alexander has a 5.26 xfip with only a 17% strikeout rate. In that time span he has really struggled against right handed hitters, allowing a 187 iso 41% hard contact rate and 43% fly ball rate

As we know, Mike Trout is one of the best hitters in the game today and he is in line for a big day here vs Alexander. Since 2021 Trout has crushed left handed pitching to the tune of a 410 woba 186 iso and 41% hard contact rate.

Luis Rengifo and Taylor Ward are two more right handed hitters we can target here vs the left handed Alexander. Rengifo and Ward both have around a 350 woba and 40% hard contact rates vs lefties since 2021

Shohei Ohtani bats left handed but he still crushes left handed pitching. Over the last 30 days Ohtani has a 368 woba 387 iso and 38% hard contact rate against lefties. However, he also has a 29% strikeout rate. Is that going to scare me off this matchup? Nah, Ohtani should roll here

Brewers vs RHP Marcus Stroman

Winds are blowing out to left at around 10 mph today in Wrigley. This should set up as a really good hitting environment for both teams in this one.

Marcus Stroman had a great 2021 season, but, he hasn’t been as sharp in 2022. Over the last 30 days he’s really struggled against left handed hitters, allowing a 343 woba 197 iso and 46% hard contact while only generating a 15% strikeout rate. He’s been much better against righties (254 / 104 / 28%k), so my primary targets against him today will be the Brewers left handed hitters.

Former league MVP Christian Yelich is one of the best left handed hitters in the game today and he’s been smashing right handed pitching recently. Over the last 30 days Yelich has a 382 woba 175 iso and 43% hard contact rate against righties

Rowdy Tellez has even better numbers over the last 30 days vs right handed pitching. In his last 72 at bats vs right handed pitchers he has registered a 401 woba 317 iso and 50% hard contact rate

Kolten Wong is another Brewers lefty who has been hot recently against righties, slashing a 415 woba 220 iso and 47% hard contact rate. If you’re looking to take some shots on Brewers right handed hitters, consider Hunter Renfroe who can always go deep at any time

Are you ready to dominate?

Red Sox vs RHP Kyle Bradish

Two days ago we wrote them up and they let us down. Yesterday we wrote them up again and they put up 10 runs. Today, we’re giving them another chance as they get yet another good matchup vs a bad Orioles starting pitcher.

Kyle Bradish has been really bad against right handed hitters the past 2 years. Since the start of the 2021 season he has allowed a 424 woba 246 iso 39% fly ball rate and a 50% hard contact rate.

Rafael Devers is a left handed hitter, but, I still like his matchup here. Bradish throws his fastball around 60% of the time to left handed hitters. Against left handed fastballs Devers has a 564 xwoba 349 iso and 52% hard contact rate dating back to the start of the 2021 season

The Red Sox have plenty of right handed bats we can target here against Bradish who struggles vs right handed hitters. JD Martinez (344/198/46%) Xander Bogaerts (354/178/40%) and Tommy Pham (not great numbers but leadoff in a high run total lineup) should be targeted here on this early slate.

Phillies vs RHP Trevor Williams

Trevor Williams has been awful against left handed hitters this year. Entering today’s game he has an overall 4.77 xfip, while against lefties he has given up a 347 woba 192 iso 40% fly ball rate and only registering an 8% strikeout rate.

Kyle Schwarber has been on fire this year against right handed pitching. He’s a boom or bust play, with his 30% strikeout rate, but, his 356 woba 330 iso and 45% hard contact rate should lead to good results here. I’m not worried about his 30% k rate in this matchup as I don’t think he’ll have trouble making contact with the ball vs Williams

Darick Hall is another left handed Philly bat we can target here vs Williams. This year, Hall has put together a 375 woba 316 iso and 51% hard contact rate against right handed pitching.

Batter Rankings Today

These rankings are not site-specific and are intended to give you a solid pool of players to build your lineups from. I’ll be using the standard positions, Catcher through Outfield in these rankings so be aware of that if you’re constructing teams on Draftkings where some players can play multiple positions.

Something I like to do with this, is to give these players a THUMBS UP or 2, or 3, in Fantasy Cruncher so I can get more exposure to them throughout my lineups
