Understanding Single-Game DFS Contests

Before we dive into the top picks, let’s quickly go over how single-game DFS contests work. In these contests, you have five flex spots with scoring identical to the main slate. However, there’s a twist—kickers are included, and there’s an “MVP” roster slot. The MVP player earns 1.5 times their total fantasy points, making this choice crucial. I wrote a more in depth Fanduel Single Game Strategy article here if you’re interested in digging deeper

MVP Candidates

Jalen Hurts ($17,500)
Our MVP conversation starts with Jalen Hurts. While he had a modest performance in Week 1 against the New England Patriots, Hurts is known for his dual-threat ability. In 2022, he led all QBs with 13 rushing touchdowns and averaged 25.6 FanDuel points per game. Facing the Vikings, who ranked 28th against the pass in 2022, Hurts is poised for a strong showing.

Justin Jefferson ($16,000)
If you’re looking for an alternative MVP pick, Justin Jefferson is a standout choice. In Week 1, he dominated with a 27.3% target share and 37.5% air yards share, hauling in 9 receptions for 150 yards against the Buccaneers. While facing a tough Eagles pass defense, Jefferson’s talent makes him a compelling option.

Kirk Cousins ($15,000)
Don’t overlook Kirk Cousins. He’s known for his passing volume, and in a game where the Vikings may be playing catch-up, he could rack up significant passing yards. With injuries in the Eagles’ secondary, Cousins has a chance to shine.

Flex Options

Alexander Mattison ($11,500)
Alexander Mattison might not be a popular choice for the MVP slot. However, he’s the clear three-down back for the Vikings and should see significant snaps and red zone opportunities. Facing the Eagles’ rush defense, which struggled in 2022, Mattison has potential.

Eagles’ Backfield Dilemma
The Eagles’ backfield presents a challenge with Kenneth Gainwell ruled out due to injury. D’Andre Swift, Rashaad Penny, and Boston Scott form a committee, and it’s uncertain how touches will be distributed. Swift appears to be the front-runner, but if Penny is active, he could be a factor. Keep an eye on this situation for potential value.

Pass-Catchers
In the receiving department, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are standout options. Both are elite talents and saw 10 targets each in Week 1. Brown has an edge in target share and air yards share, making him a higher-ceiling pick.

Dallas Goedert is another option to consider, especially with a significant snap rate and route percentage in Week 1. He’s a potential value play.

For the Vikings, T.J. Hockenson stands out as a pass-catching tight end. He had nine targets in Week 1 and should continue to be a significant part of the offense.

Defense and Kickers

The Philadelphia D/ST has appeal against a pass-heavy Vikings’ offense, especially considering Cousins’ history of turnovers. Among kickers, Jake Elliott is a preferred choice, given the Eagles’ home advantage.

Final Thoughts

This Thursday Night Football matchup between the Vikings and Eagles offers a plethora of DFS options. Whether you go with the star power of Jalen Hurts or Justin Jefferson, or find value in the flex positions, there’s something for every DFS player. Don’t forget about defense and kickers, as they can make a difference in these single-game contests.

Enjoy the game and good luck with your NFL DFS lineup!
