The Texans running back room is an interesting one. After offseason subtractions, their available options are Dameon Pierce, Marlon Mack, and Rex Burkhead. The highest ADP for these players is Dameon Pierce at 111.7 who appears to be getting the positive buzz in training camp and had a productive first preseason game.Â
At this point, it appears that Rex Burkhead should be the third-down back and is a late-round flier at best to take at the end of drafts. He is the only option of the three that is a proven pass catcher.Â

Dameon Pierce and Marlon Mack are in the biggest competition. Pierce was drafted in the fourth round of the draft and is a Gus Edwards-type runner. In the first preseason game, Pierce saw 5 carries and racked up 49 yards. He also saw 1 target in his workload. Very efficient work from the first-year back.Â
Marlon Mack is a veteran who has been plagued with injury issues. Mack suffered an Achilles tear in 2020 and it seems unlikely that he returns to the form that we saw in 2018-2019. In the first preseason game, Mack saw three carries for 6 yards. Not a large sample but it does appear that Pierce is leading the competition.Â
I think it’s safe to say that Pierce has the higher likelihood to be RB1 for the Texans but, Mack is a solid late-round flier to take for the scenario where Pierce gets injured.Â
