Top Picks for the Tournament of Champions
Jon Rahm
- DraftKings $10K
- FanDuel $12K
Strokes Gained Around the Green is really the most important stat this week. Jon Rahm ranks first in my weighted model using the Member’s Study Hub. Rahm absolutely destroys this course but has yet to win here. Last year, he posted a score of 33 under par! That happens to be the 2nd best score on 72-holes in PGA Tour history. He’s also tied the tour birdie record in a 72-hole event with a whopping 32 birds.
And as if all of that wasn’t impressive enough… Jonny’s played 20 rounds in his career at the Plantation Course and he’s NEVER shot over par. His scoring average of 68.5 is the 2nd best of players with 20 or more rounds (of all time). So yeah. There’s that.
Seamus Power
- DraftKings $7.2K
- FanDuel $9K
Ranking 8th in SG Around the Green, I really like Seamus Power this week. I like him even more on DraftKings, where he seems to be a real value. In looking at his “course fit” he’s strong around the green, as I’ve mentioned, but he’s also a pretty great putter and above average in his approach.
He’s played The Plantation Course in Maui once before, last year, and finished in 15th. Not too shabby! Looking back at this past PGA season, his last three events had him finishing 5th, 3rd, and 1st. Yay! I was checking on DraftKings and SP averages around 89 FPPG. He’s projected 75 this week and 98 using FanDuel’s scale. Lastly, I really like that his scoring average over the last 10 events has been 69. You can’t say that for much of this field in this price range.
Rostership is creeping up into dangerous territory on DraftKings, likely because of the stellar value, at nearly 19% and 15% on FanDuel.
JJ Spaun
- DraftKings $6.3K
- FanDuel $7.8
JJ Spaun is always my favorite mistake. I say that lovingly, because he has been know to really pull off big plays just when I need him the most. This week will likely be no exception. Spaun ranks 8th in SG: ATG among this field in my weighted model using the Member’s Study Hub. I’m also looking at his overall skill fit for this course and nothing jumps out at me as being spectacular, but he certainly fits the bill.
Something that does excite me when I’m comparing salaries between DraftKings and FanDuel, are when they’re so close in number like JJ’s salaries are this week. That always makes me feel like they know something we don’t and to jump on it as opposed to when the salaries vary wildly. Rostership is just inside the “go zone” for both platforms at around 11%, but I anticipate that to go a bit higher just before lock tonight. It doesn’t worry me though.
Other Players to Consider
- Justin Thomas (duh)
- Tony Finau (on fire)
- Sahith Theegala (my sleeper pick)
- Aaron Wise (gut feeling)
I can’t spill the beans on all of my favorites… or we’d be here all day, but do consider the players above, as they either have course history or I think this may just be their week according to the data (and my very intuitive gut feelings).
